Lead Magnets

Create lead magnets that match your paid offer: types, creation, delivery and simple landing pages that grow a list of the right people.

A lead magnet is a free, useful thing you give in exchange for an email address. Done well, it’s the first rung of your offer ladder: it solves one small problem, shows how you think, and naturally points toward what you sell. Done badly, it fills your list with people who will never buy anything. This guide helps you build the good kind.

What’s in the box: a menu of lead magnet types, a method for matching your magnet to your paid offer, a fast creation process, delivery setup, landing page basics, and the live Lead Magnet Idea Generator.

What makes a lead magnet work

  • Specific: solves one clear problem, not “everything about marketing.”
  • Quick: can be used or consumed in minutes, not days.
  • Useful on its own: delivers a real win even if they never buy.
  • Relevant: attracts the same people who would want your paid offer.
  • Easy to say yes to: the title alone tells people what they get.

Types of lead magnets

Checklists and cheat sheets

One page, instantly useful. “The pre-launch checklist.” Low effort to create and consume.

Templates

Something they fill in: a pitch email, a pricing worksheet, a planning doc. High perceived value.

Mini-courses

A short email or video series. Builds trust over several days and previews your teaching style.

Quizzes and assessments

“Which pricing model fits you?” Engaging, and the result lets you segment subscribers.

Workshops and webinars

A live or recorded training. Great before launches; demands more of your time and theirs.

Swipe files

Examples to model. Be sure you have rights to everything included.

Toolkits and resource lists

Your curated tools with notes on how you use them. Disclose any affiliate links.

Match your magnet to your paid offer

This is the part most people skip. Your lead magnet should solve a problem that sits just before or inside the problem your paid offer solves. That way, the people who love the magnet are exactly the people who need what you sell.

Paid offer Weak magnet Strong magnet
Course on launching a podcast “10 productivity tips” “Podcast episode planning template”
Coaching for new freelance designers “Free stock photo list” “Client proposal template for designers”
Membership for home bakers “Kitchen gadget giveaway” “Sourdough troubleshooting cheat sheet”
Newsletter on AI for accountants “Generic ChatGPT guide” “20 AI prompts for month-end close”
Pro tip: Ask yourself, “If someone loves this freebie, what’s the very next problem they’ll hit?” Your paid offer should be the answer. If it isn’t, change the magnet. Start with Create Your Offer if the paid side isn’t clear yet.

Create it in a day

  1. Pick one problem. Choose the smallest valuable problem your audience has that connects to your offer.
  2. Write a clear title. Name the result and the format: “The 7-Step Client Onboarding Checklist.”
  3. Draft with AI, then edit. Get a structure fast, then add your own shortcuts, examples and warnings.
  4. Design it simply. A clean document or Canva layout is plenty. Include your name and a link back to your site.
  5. Add a soft next step. End with one line pointing to your paid offer or your next free resource. Helpful, not pushy.
  6. Test it. Ask a couple of people in your audience to use it and tell you what’s confusing.
AI Prompt

My paid offer is [offer] for [audience]. Suggest 10 lead magnet ideas that solve a small problem just before or inside the problem my offer solves. For each, give: the title, format, the quick win it delivers, and why someone who loves it would want my paid offer next.
AI Prompt

Draft a one-page [checklist/cheat sheet] titled "[title]" for [audience]. Keep each item actionable and specific. After the draft, list 3 places where my personal experience or examples would make it stronger.
AI angle: AI-made freebies are everywhere now, so generic ones get ignored. The best magnets include something only you can add: your process, your templates, your real examples.

Delivery: getting it into their hands

Keep delivery simple and reliable. Most email platforms can send a lead magnet automatically when someone subscribes.

  • Host the file somewhere stable (your site, email platform, or cloud storage with correct sharing settings).
  • Deliver by email so subscribers confirm their address and whitelist you.
  • Also show a thank-you page with the download link or next steps.
  • Test the whole flow yourself with a fresh email address.
  • Follow up with a short welcome sequence, not silence.

Landing page basics

Your lead magnet deserves its own simple page. Fewer distractions means more of the right people sign up.

Headline

Name the result and the format. Clear beats clever. Try the Headline Analyzer.

Three bullets

What they’ll get or be able to do. Short and concrete.

Visual

A simple mockup or preview so people see what’s inside.

Form and consent

Ask only for what you need (usually just email). Say what they’ll receive and how often.

Heads up: Follow email consent and anti-spam rules (for example CAN-SPAM in the US and GDPR where it applies). Be clear that signing up adds people to your list, make unsubscribing easy, and never add people who didn’t opt in.

Where to promote your lead magnet

A great freebie nobody sees won’t grow your list. Put it everywhere your audience already runs into you:

On your site

Link it from related blog posts, your homepage, your about page and a simple top-bar or end-of-post box.

In your content

Mention it at the end of videos, podcasts and social posts where it genuinely helps with the topic.

Through partners

Guest posts, podcast interviews and newsletter swaps. See Partnerships and Affiliates.

In communities

Share only where the rules allow it, and lead with help, not links.

Measure and improve

Watch two things: how many visitors sign up, and how many subscribers later engage or buy. Signup rates vary widely by traffic source and niche, so compare against your own past results rather than someone else’s numbers. If lots of people sign up but nobody buys, the magnet is attracting the wrong crowd. Adjust the match.

Also read the replies. When subscribers answer your welcome email with questions, those questions are your next lead magnet, your next blog post, or a missing lesson in your paid offer. Refresh your magnet at least once a year so dates, tools and examples stay current.
